112S ceOwCL. SL500 Tasco Specialty 25 x 30 mm Brass Spyglass TelescopeA classic, hand-held telescope with a gleaming brass finish and leatherette trim. Extends from 5.25 to 14 in. and includes an attractive leatherette carrying case with wrist strap and belt loop.

Customer Review: Spyglass

I work on a boat and I just wanted to mess around and bring it out when the guys were watching. The spyglass actually works fine, but it has its limitations. One of which is finding what you are pointing at and the other is focusing. Once you get the hang of it it gets somewhat easier, but not much.

Customer Review: Exellent first buy!

This is an exellent buy if this is your first brass spyglass. For being so sheap this sure is good quality, every part of it is verry accurate. I really do have seen a lot worse. People who do not CARE to examine and learn for themselves OR are not used to handle and use spyglasses may have some problem getting the focus right. In any case the focus is really sharp when you do get it right.

You need to twist the smallest tube to change the focus depth. Pracise make perfect!

Even thou its not verry big in size i found that it was as "big" and heavy as i would tolerate for easy carrying and easy use in a larp. You may carry it in a small beltbag, and it fits nicely in your palm.

The only bad thing about it was the fake-leather. I bought it to use on a Pirate LARP (Live Action Role Playing) and i had to remove the plastic "leather" and sew on a new real piece of darkbrown leather myself.
Besides this, modern brass items are often lacquerd with a special clear brass protective lacquer, witch makes it impossible to corrode. I wandted that antique feeling since im using it on larps. So in order to get that old look to it I took everything apart (total disensembling), and polished off the lacquer using a grinding machine with a verry fine polishing rondell, and reassembled it. Afer two months it looked like a movie prop, corroded (darkened) and beautiful.
However I do not recommend anyone to do this UNLESS you are a craftsman who knows how to work metals and have basic (proffessional) polishing skills. If you are going to do this anyway, be extra careful to remove the glass parts so that you dont accidentally polish them! And be careful not to grind away any metal or you may destroy it completley.

There are more than five, exactly the same, spyglasses here on Amazon.com they look exactly the same and comes with the same fake-leather carrying case. So im leaving this rating on a fiew of them. They are all manufactured in the same place, probably china, and distributed to the different vendors.

I hope my rewiew was any help to you!
Have a Good Larp!

41tYPGfVEGL. SL500 Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIAs Spytechs, from Communism to al QaedaFrom two men who know better than anyone how espionage really works, an unprecedented history?heavily illustrated with neverbefore- seen images?of the CIA?s most secretive operations and the gadgets that made them possible.

It is a world where the intrigue of reality exceeds that of fiction. What is an invisible photo used for? What does it take to build a quiet helicopter? How does one embed a listening device in a cat? If these sound like challenges for Q, James Bond?s fictional gadget-master, think again. They?re all real-life devices created by the CIA?s Office of Technical Service?an ultrasecretive department that combines the marvels of state-of-the-art technology with the time-proven traditions of classic espionage. And now, in the first book ever written about this office, the former director of OTS teams up with an internationally renowned intelligence historian to take readers into the laboratory of espionage.

Spycraft tells amazing life and death stories about this littleknown group, much of it never before revealed. Against the backdrop of some of America?s most critical periods in recent history?including the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the war on terror?the authors show the real technical and human story of how the CIA carries out its missions.

Customer Review: The Kindergarten Version

Don't be deceived by the many positive reviews of this book. There is nothing new here; every bit of this information is already in the public record, and most of it is available in many other (and better) books, including several by the same author. You can get the same information, and much more entertainment, just by walking through the Spy Museum in Washington, DC!

It's not wrong, and not inaccurate; just Old News, that has been written about over and over again, and this book doesn't add a thing.

Customer Review: Good Book

A bit slow at times, but incredible what they did in a few short years.

The Unlikely Spy

51ZuXzBv%2BgL. SL500 The Unlikely Spy"In wartime," Winston Churchill wrote, "truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." For Britain's counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable-a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent: Catherine Blake, a beautiful widow of a war hero, a hospital volunteer-and a Nazi spy under direct orders from Hitler to uncover the Allied plans for D-Day...

Customer Review: A D-Day Nazi-Allied Forces Espionage Thriller

"The Unlikely Spy" is a very good WWII espionage spy thriller. It's long - 725 pages, but rarely does it drag, and most of the time the story is interesting, intriguing, well-crafted, and often compelling. There are only a few instances of a solution to a dilemma faced by one of the characters that is too pat or too contrived (a problem often found in novels such as this). The characters, for the most part, remain true to their personality, training and mission.

Only the two main German spies (Horst and Anna) fall out of their roles glaringly one or two times: one such moment is the unfortunate "street" fight with a local Brit that Horst gets himself into; the other is when Anna begins to doubt herself, her mission, herself, and begins to gain a conscience. These two German spies are clever, well-trained and effective in what they do, and even when they are humanly inconsistent, they are convincing and exceptional. One does not root for them, but one does rather admire them. Anna, in particular, is complex and complicated, a beautiful woman with a somewhat tortured past. But she has been trained to kill and kill she does.

The one American (Peter) is true to his character almost unfailingly, as are the British main characters, especially the very well-drawn likeable Vicary and the more mysterious cad Boothby.

The real-life historical figures, Eisenhower, Churchill and all the usual German demons (like Canaris, Himmler, and Hitler) play big to small roles, as is appropriate for the story, except for the main German background player, Major Vogel who runs Anna, whom he placed in Britain in 1938, 6 years before she was needed by the 3rd Reich to unravel allied plans for D-Day in early 1944.

It's all about D-Day, and this story proved a timely read here in June 2009 during the days leading up to and after the recent 65th anniversary ceremony celebrating the costly but successful Allied invasion of France in 1944. This story revolves around German and Allied hand-wringing over where and when the Allied invasion would occur. Would the Germans discover that it would occur at Normandy --- or as the Allies wanted them to believe - at Calais? That is the entire nexus of the story.

In the end, I liked this book better than (though it is greatly different from) Michael Dobbs' books about Churchill in the same time period (see "Never Surrender"). Silva apparently doesn't have the pressure to try to teach history, except as it is incidentally important to his story. Then he gets it right. But make no mistake: this is fiction - as are all of Dobbs' works.

The plot is complicated (but not too complex), and it is filled with engaging, distinctive characters. I was amazed to find myself on page 500-something, absorbed and engaged in the story. Silva does a reasonably good job writing women, though his forte is men.

I was struck with how this story is an excellent mix of plain old police detective work and subtle ruthless intelligence work. Silva mixes the two very, very well.

I think it is probably about 150 pages too long. What makes it long is Silva's penchant for a great amount of background detail - all interesting, mind you, but nonetheless perhaps not so much is needed to move the story forward. It is also surprisingly "neutral" as to which side holds the cards, brains and skill - with plenty of blunders on both sides.

In the last ½ of the book there is a plenitude of bloody, appalling and mindless killings and murders, as the 2 German spies fight to escape MI-5 and the entire Allied intelligence apparatus bearing down on them after their cover is blown. Once you get over Silva's occasional invented and too-pat circumstantial events that actually help the Brits run down these spies, the story picks up momentum and becomes a page turner. Both sides make countless errors and missteps. Just because you want the Brits to win out, does not imbue them with infallibility.

The book's major flaw, I think, is the somewhat pedestrian and not-very-creative finale or ultimate resolution. I would have hoped that the last 125 pages would live up to the first 600 pages in creativity and cleverness, but they did not. While not exactly disappointing, the conclusion left me wanting something a little better. It is for this reason that I do not give this book a 5 rating.

All-in-all, if you like WWII espionage historical fiction, this book is a great read. It's brutal, realistic, and a fun romp in 1944 England and Germany, great for vicarious re-living (or first-living) of that marvelous time in our history. This is a great book to read on a holiday, on an airplane, or when you are free to indulge 2 or 3 days to escape into the greatest era of old-fashioned espionage -- World War II. This is not the economical, terse beauty that Alan Furst might write (see his "Spies of Warsaw"), but nonetheless it is very, very good. I give it a 4+.

Customer Review: The Unlikely Spy

Good, complex, suspense/spy thriller. On par with Day of the Jackal; flipping from the Englsih MI5 bureau to the German Ahwer spy bureau during the planning of the Normandy invasion of the Second World War.

Minox DSC Digital Spy Camera

21owpvdySnL. SL500 Minox DSC Digital Spy CameraDSC is the name of the new mini MINOX camera model: Digital Spy Camera. This outstanding masterpiece in minimalist design and photo technology packs remarkable features into dimensions of just 86 x 29 x 20 mm. With a resolution of five million pixels it can compete with traditional digital cameras with ease. The bright viewfinder allows spontaneous, fast shots, even in critical light conditions. In twilight the integrated flash switches on automatically. In total these features make the new DSC a very sound optical notebook.

The system has an additional external flash that can be connected to the side of the DSC. And to provide the user with the accustomed convenience of a display for viewing film and image results the flash has an integrated 1.5 inch TFT LCD monitor. The image data can be saved on micro SD memory cards of up to 16 GB, in addition to the internal memory.

Customer Review: a small gem - but demanding

Mine worked right out of the box - and made very nice pictures. Obviously, these cannot be viewed in really big formats, but they look great up to approx. 1600x1200. However, making a good picture is a rather demanding task, as wobbles and wrong lighting show very quickly. So you either have a very steady hand or you develop a knack for finding surfaces to stabilize your DSC :)

The battery does use up quickly (30-50 pics), but also recharges in 20 minutes. In addition, you may want to buy a converter for recharging with the USB cable at any power outlet.

The flash seems too strong at short distances, but I rarely use it, as pics are great even in low light, if the camera is held stable enough.

In total, this is a nice little gem which demands some knowledge of photography for good results.

Customer Review: major disappointment

I have been using Minox cameras and equipment for many years, but this new camera is not up to the standards of previous Minox products.

The images are very poor quality. The camera claims 5 mega pixels, but only delivers approximately 3. The unit i received was defective right from the factory. the built in flash didn't activate even in total darkness. the clip on flash unit didn't operate at all and the screen mounted in the flash unit was totally inoperable. you could not review pics except on your computer.

the camera didn't come with a real charger or charger cable and must be connected to your computer to charge the battery. the battery also holds a very small charge and discharges quickly.

i plan to return my camera and do NOT recommend this unit to anyone, particularly if you expect the same quality of camera as a Minox 8 1/2 x11 camera. v this item is little more than an overpriced toy!

51wsHpi1jDL. SL500 Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America

This stunning book, based on KGB archives that have never come to light before, provides the most complete account of Soviet espionage in America ever written. In 1993, former KGB officer Alexander Vassiliev was permitted unique access to Stalin-era records of Soviet intelligence operations against the United States. Years later, living in Britain, Vassiliev retrieved his extensive notebooks of transcribed documents from Moscow. With these notebooks John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr have meticulously constructed a new, sometimes shocking, historical account.

Along with general insights into espionage tactics and the motives of Americans who spied for Stalin, Spies resolves specific, long-seething controversies. The book confirms, among many other things, that Alger Hiss cooperated with Soviet intelligence over a long period of years, that journalist I. F. Stone worked on behalf of the KGB in the 1930s, and that Robert Oppenheimer was never recruited by Soviet intelligence. Spies also uncovers numerous American spies who were never even under suspicion and satisfyingly identifies the last unaccounted for American nuclear spies. Vassiliev tells the story of the notebooks and his own extraordinary life in a gripping introduction to the volume.

Customer Review: Flawed but Interesting

Vassiliev's notebooks offer a signicant contribution to understanding Soviet espionage in the 1930s and 40s. However, the interpretations and narratives by Haynes and Klehr often lack logic. As a previous reviewer noted, it is certainly arguable that there was no "fall" of the KGB in America. The early generation of ideologically-motivated spies described in this book may have been revealed or retired, but there were many, like the Walkers, Hanssen, and Ames, who came later. Comments by Haynes and Klehr unfairly criticize the FBI. In one passage, after describing Bentley's statements to the FBI about Julius, they claim that the FBI "overlooked an elementary step. No agent ever checked with the Knickerbocker Village rental management office, where he would have quickly learned that a Julius Rosenberg had been renting an apartment there in 1942." This is a ridiculous statement. Knickerbocker Village, a huge development built in the 1930s that covered 4 blocks, had 1,593 apartments. A search for a tenant using only the first name of Julius would hardly have been done "quickly" in an age of paper records. Although the meeting between Golos and Julius took place "near the Knickerbocker Village apartments," the FBI couldn't be sure that Julius actually lived there.
Despite Haynes and Klehr, Vassiliev's material is interesting and solves some mysteries of the era.

Customer Review: Important work but a bit flawed

Very important piece of work for those interested in soviet espionage in America. There is a "before" and "after" Spies. Like they said : at last, Alger Hiss's case is closed. Well, to me it was closed a long ago, and die-hard liberals will never believe Vassiliev is for real anyway. But who gives a damn about them ?

That being said, i have several remarks :

1) The book title is too optimistic. KGB fall in America in the 1950s ? Bull****. Like the phoenix, the KGB (the real one, that begins in 1954), has many lives. Many walk-ins from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s... amongst them Johnny Walker, Robert Hanssen, Aldrich Ames... can prove that. And we have to wait another what ? sixty years before learning the whole truth ? It sucks. I just see the 40s as being the golden age of soviet spying in America, but the future is still to be ascertained (?)

2) The book is way too dry. There is no contextualization whatsoever, only names, names, names... It cannont interest any people beyond the ordinary spy buff. That's not a book that grabs you during sleepless nights. Sorry folks, but too much information can kill information. This books way too often reads like a spy catalogue, with sub-chapters titled with spy names (except for the last chapter, one the spy practices). So what ? Another spy, ok, there always be more, that's not the F**** point, you have to put it into context. We need some depth here, not front page magazine story.

That being said, you cannot miss this one if you're into espionage stuff.

Customer Review: Great camera for the price

For the price, this camera is really good. And it comes with cable too. The cable has the power in it also, so if you want to extend the run, you have to buy special cable, but enough is included so that's unlikely. The video is pretty good in both day and night. I have a different camera that has better video and an adjustable lens, but I paid almost 4 times as much. Can't go wrong at this price.
